About
Thomas Kugler is a graphic & web designer with formal training and professional experience in the theory, concepts, and principles of graphic design, and award-winning web design and development skills. He has versatility in various disciplines, from print to web to mobile, with a grasp of the technical challenges of all.
A graphic and web designer since 2007, entering this industry was a career change for Thomas, following concurrent previous careers in film, music, and theatre in Los Angeles. A 2008 graduate of Center for Digital Imaging Arts (CDIA) at Boston University (Washington, DC campus), he was awarded a scholarship to CDIA after winning the SkillsUSA national championship in Web Design for 2007. This also earned him a Professional Webmaster certification from the World Organization of Webmasters (WOW).
Following his graduation from CDIA, Thomas relocated to his hometown of Washington, DC, and has since worked for a number of associations. These include the National Head Start Association (NHSA), Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). This latter engagement was a longterm position with ASAE from 2011–2016 as Website Administrator (Designer/Developer/Strategist).
During his tenure at ASAE, Thomas grew and expanded upon both his design and development skills. With a number of websites winning awards from Web Marketing Association (WMA), these achievements have been widely recognized. In 2014, he led design and development on ASAE Site's 2014 Responsive Redesign (link is to demo site, live site overwritten in 2016). In 2013, he led UI/UX design & front-end development of ASAE's e-commerce and proflile platforms, and led the design of the ASAE Foundation website.
In 2016, Thomas moved on to lead the expansion of in-house capacity for front-end web design & development at ISG Solutions, a position that expanded upon his background with associations, serving as a consultant to (primarily) association clients. This included the creation of lasting template models and standardization of design and front-end development processes, User Interface/User Experience (UI/UX) Design, Responsive HTML Email Template Design & Development, Marketing & Branding, HTML/CSS/JavaScript Development, CMS Development (iMIS/RiSE, WordPress), and serving as Accessibility Lead.
More recently, Thomas joined Hendall, Inc. to become Senior Web Designer/Developer, leading design and UI/UX on a site for federal government client BHSIS (Behavioral Health Services Information System), an agency under SAMHSA (Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration). A robust site enabling nationwide assistance to those seeking help for substance use and mental health issues, FindTreatment.gov launched in January 2023. Thomas is excited to also contribute to a Spanish version of this site, currently in development. Additionally, he has continued to expand in graphic design, lending his talents to branding for BHSIS/FindTreatment.gov, with logo design and related graphic design assets.
Thomas also maintains a freelance client base, providing services across the full spectrum of graphics for both print and digital media. His skills and experience range from logos, to branding and identity, to illustration, to fully-developed websites. He welcomes new clients, and looks forward to bringing his best to your project.
